When couples first start planning their wedding, the focus usually lands on the big, obvious expenses — the venue, catering, photography, entertainment. Those numbers feel tangible. They’re exciting. They’re the parts you’ve likely dreamed about. What often catches couples off guard isn’t the major line items… it’s the quieter costs that appear along the way. The ones that don’t always make it into early planning conversations, but absolutely impact your final investment.
After planning weddings across South Dakota for over a decade, I see this pattern again and again — not because couples are careless or unprepared, but because no one ever sat down and showed them the full picture from the beginning. This guide is here to do exactly that.
Weddings are layered events. Every decision touches multiple vendors, timelines, and behind- the-scenes logistics. When certain expenses aren’t planned for early, they tend to show up later as stress, rushed decisions, or last-minute compromises. This is one of the biggest differences between planning on your own and planning with an experienced professional. Knowing what typically gets overlooked allows you to:
A big part of my role isn’t just managing logistics — it’s helping couples understand what their vision truly costs in real life, early enough to make confident, informed decisions. While online research is helpful, wedding pricing is highly variable. Costs are influenced by season, guest count, location, quality level, production needs, and customization. And if you’ve never planned an event of this scale, it’s incredibly difficult to know what a Pinterest photo actually represents in terms of investment. That’s where experience matters.
While I’m not a financial planner, my guidance is grounded in real-world planning, current South Dakota market rates, and a clear understanding of how each choice impacts the overall budget. I help couples align expectations with realistic numbers, explore thoughtful alternatives, and make decisions that feel intentional instead of reactive.
That includes:
– Identifying commonly overlooked costs before contracts are signed
– Helping you prioritize what matters most
– Creating breathing room so your budget can flex as plans evolve
– Translating industry norms into plain language
It’s not about spending more — it’s about planning with clarity and confidence.
I worked with a couple planning their wedding in Sioux Falls who initially felt confident in their budget — until we mapped out vendor requirements, rentals, and full weekend logistics. Because we addressed those items early, they were able to adjust intentionally instead of reacting later. The result? A wedding that felt thoughtful, well-paced, and fully aligned with their priorities — financially and emotionally.
At Storybook Love Events, my approach is rooted in transparency, intention, and education. I believe couples deserve honest guidance, clear expectations, and a planning experience that feels steady and supportive — not overwhelming.
How much should we set aside for unexpected costs?
Ideally, I love to see couples set aside around $2,000 for unplanned expenses. In the best-case scenario, you never need it — and it turns into a honeymoon upgrade instead.
Are these costs different across South Dakota?
Yes. Location matters. Rural venues may appear less expensive upfront, but vendor travel costs can offset those savings. This is another area where a planner helps you see the full picture early.
Can a planner actually help us save money?
Absolutely. It’s not uncommon for our guidance to save couples enough that we essentially pay for ourselves by helping avoid costly missteps.
If you’re planning a wedding in South Dakota and want guidance that helps you feel informed,
prepared, and supported, I’d love to connect. Let’s build a budget — and a wedding day — that feels just as good as it looks.
